International Meeting for Equal Cities
October 28 - October 31
Declaration of the International Meeting for Equal Cities
A common commitment
We, organizations, movements and networks of inhabitants, academics and local governments committed to territorial social justice have gathered in Buenos Aires, at the same time as the meeting officially convened by URBAN 20, to discuss an alternative position to neoliberal urban management and to exchange ideas and experiences on the cities to which we aspire in this international context of economic, social, environmental and political crisis.
We rely on essential contributions such as the Municipal Declaration on the Right to Housing and the Right to the City and on all the international instruments that promote the guarantee of the right to housing and to a dignified habitat as fundamental human rights.
We understand the Right to the City as the right of all inhabitants, present and future, permanent and temporary, to inhabit, use, occupy, produce, transform, govern and enjoy just, egalitarian, safe, sustainable and democratic cities, towns and urban settlements, defined as common goods for a dignified life, to be shared and owned by all members of the community.
The defense of the Right to the City reaffirms, updates and defends human rights and the corresponding state obligations: the “leave no one behind” agreement of Agenda 2030, and the “leave no place behind” of the Declaration of the 9th World Urban Forum. Cities can be a place for everyone.
